.:The New Black
On 24th September 2008, FILM LONDON, the capital’s film and media agency launched The New Black, a two year funding and training programme that expanded opportunities for theatrical exhibition of Black film in London.
At the event Adrian Wootton, Film London’s Chief Executive, Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney & Stoke Newington and Kanya King MBE, founder of MOBO (pictured above) revealed details of the package.
Film London, with money from the UK Film Council and Skillset, invested in black film as part of a strategy to ensure films available in cinemas to reflect the rich diversity of London.
The New Black provided existing Black film exhibitors with invaluable financial support to market and publicise their events more effectively, enabling them to grow and develop their audience.

 .:The New Black Film Network
Fifteen of the UK’s leaders of black film exhibition came together from Wales, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Kent, Essex, and the capital to the Film London offices to attend The New Black Training Programme.
The New Black Network was formed when the scheme finished, and as part of Tower Hamlets Black History Month in October 2009, the network launched their first event, a film screening and Q+A with pioneer black filmmaker Horace Ove.

.:Definition of Black Film

Film London recognises that there is no single definition of 'black film' and that such definitions can be considered unhelpful. A pragmatic approach to defining black film is required and Film London has adopted the following definition:
"Black film is that which is made wholly, or largely, by or with a black cast or crew, and/or has a story, subjects or themes which deal with black experience, history or culture, or present a specific view, comment or insight into issues that clearly relate to Black British life.
